Leo Learns About Healthcare Children’s Book Series

Kiddos Magazine had the wonderful opportunity to interview Nicole Jacobsen, healthcare professional, author, and creator of the Leo Learns About Healthcare children’s book series. Through her inspiring work, Nicole is helping children better understand healthcare in a fun, approachable, and age-appropriate way.

Her books introduce young readers to important topics such as hospitals, medical procedures, mental health, and healthcare careers, empowering them with knowledge while helping to reduce fear and anxiety. Nicole’s mission is to spark curiosity, build confidence, and inspire the next generation to learn more about the world of healthcare.

KM: What inspired you to create the Leo Learns About Healthcare book series?

Nicole Jacobsen: The series actually began with my nephew and godson, Leo. I wanted to write books that would help him understand healthcare in a fun, comforting way while encouraging his natural curiosity. As I wrote for Leo, I realized these stories could also help children everywhere feel more confident about healthcare and maybe even inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.

KM: Why is it important for children to learn about healthcare at an early age?

Nicole Jacobsen: When children understand what healthcare professionals do, they often feel less afraid and more confident during medical experiences. Early education also encourages healthy habits and curiosity about helping others.

KM: How do your books help children feel less afraid of doctors, hospitals, and medical procedures?

Nicole Jacobsen: The stories introduce healthcare through friendly characters, simple explanations, and positive experiences. By making unfamiliar situations feel familiar, children can approach healthcare with greater confidence.

KM: What do you hope children and parents take away from your books?

Nicole Jacobsen: I hope families have meaningful conversations about healthcare and that children realize hospitals are places filled with people who care about helping them. I also hope they discover that healthcare can be an exciting career path.

KM: What inspires you to teach kids about healthcare and encourage them to explore these important topics?

Nicole Jacobsen: Every day I see the impact that compassionate healthcare professionals have on patients’ lives. If my books can spark curiosity, reduce fear, or inspire even one child to dream about a future in healthcare, then I’ve accomplished my goal.

KM: What makes the Leo Learns About Healthcare series different from other children’s books?

Nicole Jacobsen: The series is written by a healthcare professional and educator, so every story combines accurate healthcare information with fun, age-appropriate adventures. My goal is to help children build confidence while introducing them to the many amazing careers in healthcare.
